Frisbee
A Frisbee is a classic cheap and simple outdoor toy. Yet somehow it is also capable of providing tons of fun. My kids and I have a great time throwing ours around in our backyard. It's also really convenient for at the beach and park. I always have one in the back of my car along with a wiffle ball bat and ball and a Nerf football.
I came across some sad news yesterday, February 10th 2010. Fred Morrison, the inventor of the frisbee passed away from a battle with cancer. Fred was 90 years old and seemed to have lived a very long and happy life.
History of the Frisbee
Walter Frederick Morrison used to toss a cake pan around with his wife Lucile all of the time for fun. One day at the beach in 1938 someone came up to them and offered Walter a quarter for their cake pan. He then began regularly buying cake pans for 5 cents, then he would sell the at the beach for a quarter. He had quite a little business going. Morrison then served in the Air Force flying P-47s during WWII. In the war he thought about how he could make the cake pans fly better because they really weren't always too accurate. Fred made some sketches and prototypes naming his invention the Whirlo Way. He partnered with Warren Franscioni in 1948 and began selling them at fairs. They changed the name to The Flyin-Saucer when UFO's were being reported around the country. In 1950 the partnership ended and Fred began designing a new Flyin-Saucer. In 1955 Walter debuted the Pluto Platter. In 1957 Wham-O bought the rights from Morrison for the Pluto Platter and renamed it the Frisbee. In 1964 the Frisbee got another redesign by the new General Manager of Wham-O, Ed Headrick. Headrick made it more accurate. Headrick began making Frisbee into a sport and sales took off.
When was the last time you threw a Frisbee?Loading...
Too much time. I should buy one new to remember when I was younger, only that my Rottweiler would like it too:). Great invention, perfect in its simplicity. Beautiful hub. :)
My boys like these sorts of things or anything that moves fast for that matter
Always neat to know the history behind some of our most loved toys!
Jim, History behind Frisbee is interesting to read. It's a simple outdoor toy but loved by many across the world.
I enjoyed reading this hub--I remember with pleasure playing frisbee with our cocker spaniel who made some terrific moves to catch it with her teeth!
Great hub!! enjoyed the videos on frisbee golf and ultimate frisbee. Brett Favre would appreciate some of those catches and passes...it is also fun to play catch with your dog. Thanks..
I would have enjoyed playing frisbee a lot more in my younger years if I'd had someone like Lucile Morrison as a playmate. Heck, I'd even try playing again now if I had someone like Lucile Morrison as a playmate!
Great Hub, Jim! I learned a few things here.
I had no idea there were frisbee leagues and championships and so on. I have a friend teaching in S. Korea and she played in overseas games - even traveled. It was amazing. A simple toy. Wow! (I wrote a hub interviewing her).
Great hub and great background information. Thanks a lot!
JIM THE 70'S CALLED THEY WANT THIS HUB BACK...

Seriously I have no clue why this site cannot be published anymore. I hope this text at the bottom solves my dilemma. I have a lot of great information about the frisbee. People have told me that in their comments. I worked very hard on it. I have deleted like all of the great different frisbee's and games I previously promoted on it. I am now even taking away all the great videos of the different types of frisbee games. My only guess is that I apparently must have too many YouTube videos. So by the time this is acceptable to be published I will be very sorry for all my readers who do not get to see all of the great information I once had on here about the frisbee. If you were in school and had to do a project on the frisbee. I think my hub would have been better than wikipedia with all my videos of the different games like frisbee golf, ultimate frisbee and how to teach a dog to catch a frisbee.
