Crazy Kitchen Gadgets

Are they serious? What happened to the good old fashion slicer?
Are they serious? What happened to the good old fashion slicer?

Look at all the Cool Kitchen Gadgets

I am overwhelmed yet amazed at all of the different kitchen gadgets available today. Sure I have been duped into buying some that I barely ever use. I have also gotten some of them as presents. But, to be honest I prefer to stay away from single use items especially since I have such a small kitchen. Don't get me wrong some of them are fun and exciting to use. But, unless I need to core over 10 pineapples a week I don't think I should bother buying the pineapple corer. Many kitchen gadgets like the spinning apple peeler have been around for a long time. They are a great time saver and both kids and adults love to watch the apple spin while making a long twisting peel. But, I just don't make apple pies often enough and the skin is the healthiest part anyway. Of course I guess I could also use it for potatoes. Well I will probably just stick to my good old peeler and knife. A lot of these gadgets get great reviews. It just depends on how much use I think I will get out of them. What would I do with pizza scissors? It seems like if I bought it I would need a small and a large for the different size pizzas. Sure I have an egg slicer but, to be honest I have only used it a few times and probably didn't even need to. Oh and I love fruit salad but, have never bothered to use that strange melon baller contraption in the back of my draw.

Kitchen Gadgets

So does anyone out there have great uses for all of these kitchen contraptions? Do you have any good uses for some of the gadgets that seems to marketed as only having one use. I think I could use some better excuses to buy some of these because they will be taking up some valuable real estate in my drawers and on my counter. Too be honest I should probably go through some of my drawers and utensil holders and see what I can take out.

Amazon Price: Too low to display
List Price: $49.99

So what kitchen gadgets have you found worth buying?

I think with kitchen gadgets it is a case of getting attracted by how novel and intersting they are rather than how much they are going to be used. I often get carried away and buy something that just sits in my kitchen for ever after.

It was amusing to read the article. I was reminded of a gadget that I bought meant for slicing eggs. It looks so complicated that I have never had the courage to use it so far....I find that most of these gadgets remain in cupboards after the initial enthusiasm, and we get back to using our good old ones ..

You sound like my hubby. I have to watch him in shops that sell kitchen gadgets or else he buys all sorts of stuff and nonsense lol

You asked: "So does anyone out there have great uses for all of these kitchen contraptions?"

Actually, I do. I have a bed and breakfast and do a lot of cooking, and sometimes we have to core a dozen or so apples for German Baked Apple Pancakes. The corer really comes in handy then. Thanks for the info.

I love a good gadget - especially when it is well made, fits the hand nicely, is nice to look at...and actually works! My favorite gadget from many years ago was a french fry slicer - wish I had it right now! Oh, and the yogurt maker was quite useful.

My brother gave me a refrigerator magnet years ago that says "Whoever Dies With The Most Kitchen Gadgets Wins". I'm sure that I'm at the front of the pack. If it makes cooking and preparing food quicker and easier, I most probably have one (or maybe two or three or.......).

Thanks Reena, yes a lot of them seems like must have's until you get home and realize you already do a fine job with what you have.

Thanks Kiran8, I have one of those egg slicers but, I have only used it a few times to nicely cut strawberries when people come over for breakfast. They look great on top of my belgian waffles. As for eggs I don't have a need to slice them. I don't really like eggs in salads and don't know why else I would slice them.

Thanks Ethel, your husband sounds like a great guy. Often times a kitchen gadget will catch my eye and I will hound my wife about why I need it. When it works out and I use it a lot it is great. But, of course there are also the times she says hey why haven't you used the_____ lately and I will try to come up with an excuse since I regretted buying it. The Magic Bullet comes to mind. It works great but, clean up kind of stinks. I really wish I had gotten an immersion blender instead.

Thanks for visiting RVDaniels.

Thanks Alekhouse, that is a great use for an apple corer. There definitely is a use for many of these kitchen gadgets. But, some like the pizza scissors seem completely ridiculous to me. Oh and I would love the recipe those sound fantastic. I sometimes make banana walnut pancakes or blueberry pancakes and I love them. It seems so worth it to make them from scratch instead of the box.

Thanks BkCreative, I love french fries but, have never tried that one. My favorite is to cut up some sweet potatoes and fry them up in my deep fryer. A lot of the yogurt in the store is kind of lousy and I would prefer fresh fruit in it. I'm not sure if I am up for the challenge of making my own yogurt. The best yogurt I had was some fruit ones at Trader Joe's made with Buffalo milk. Sady it has been discontinued.

Great hub--lots of neat gadgets to look at, lol...I have several of the vintage versions of the things you show--they work so well, and never wear out, so I don't think I'll be needing to buy the new versions for awhile, lol...

OH! And I agree about the pizza scissors...can't even imagine using those!lol

I do have one of those jumbo-sized griddles, though--I'd be lost without it!

Hiya Jim! What a fun idea for a Hub - and very cool gadgets!! =) I'm not much into them myself - I still hand-squeeze fruit juice! (lol)

Thanks TamCor, I love my electric griddle too.

Thanks Tonya, that sounds messy. I don't have a juicer either.

Thanks badcompany99, I will definitely check that out.

You're right pal, I still like the old-fashion utensils no matter what... I can use a knife to peel the orange but not a modern machine that needs to be powered or something. Regards

I need a good cheese slicer... I can't find any that I like, and we cut the cheese (no pun intended...lol) daily!! They are all just 'sissy' slicers!!! Any suggestions??? :-)

jim10 profile image

jim10 Hub Author 2 years ago

Thanks Montana, I haven't used a cheese slicer. I usually just stick to a knife and my cutting board. But, I did check out Amazon for some reviews and a cheese plane sounded like a good way to slice cheese. They had some cheese slicers that use wires and are attached to cutting boards too. But, they are probably too flimsy since you don't want a sissy one. Some of them had good reviews but, I think the cheese plane might be a simpler and easier solution. Or since you need something tougher maybe a nice cheese knife and a good cutting board would be a better option. I added some links above for you.

Jim,

I bought a cheap $8.00 sandwich crisper, it melts the cheese and the bread gets all crispy, I love it. I like the different gadgets you found.

My kitchen if full of gadgets I never use, so I know where you're coming from about space-saving. Yet I never seem to have the thing I need, why is that? The thing I never use is that giant punch bowl, what was I thinking?

About 10 years ago Pat decided that she wanted more space for people in her kitchen - everybody comes into the kitchen to talk to her when she is cooking.

So she took everything out of the cupboards and drawers and put all her kitchen stuff into big boxes.

Her Wonderful Husband then ripped everything out back to bare walls.

For months she had a folding table and camping stove while Wonderful Husband rebuilt the kitchen - but with a lot less cupboard space.

During the period of construction, most of her gadgets stayed in the boxes.

When the new kitchen was finished, she had a garage sale and got rid of all the stuff she didn't use while the construction work was going on!

Pat says: of all the gadgets you've shown, the only one I've got now is a cheese plane. It does a nice job of shaving thin(ish) slics off a block of cheese, good for making sandwiches.

Fun hub- thanks.

Wow! I would have never imagined cooking was that complex! Some amazing, interesting gadgets here.

jim10 profile image

jim10 Hub Author 2 years ago

I know, a lot of this can be done with just a few knives and maybe 2 or 3 kitchen utensils. Some of them do seem like good times savers. But, it is so much more stuff you might not really need.

Anath profile image

Anath 2 years ago

I think just having them in my kitchen might fool people into believing that I am a good cook ;-) which is not bad...specially when trying to find a boyfriend.

Sounds like a good plan Anath, just make sure you take them out of the package(LOL).

Wow! A tool to get the seeds out of a jalapeno!! For those who eat and cook with them, we all know that the seeds have to go, and I have never figured out how to get the seeds gone first...they are the hottest part of the vegetable..Thanks for enlightening me there was such an animal out there...Great hub!

jim10 profile image

jim10 Hub Author 2 years ago

Thanks Wealthmadehealthy, I have had trouble with those hot chilis' before too. I haven't tried that gadget yet but, it sure would be useful. I usually use a paring knife and a fork and make a huge mess. It really stinks when you get the stuff in your eye or on a cut. I always clean my hands with lemon juice after. That does a great job getting rid of the hot juices.

The peanut butter and jelly spreader made me laugh! I love that! I tend to walk into a kitchen store and walk out with stuff that I really think is going to be a great thing for my kitchen - such as ravioli cutters - but most of the time I forget about it as soon as I get home. But inside the store it is such a great idea...

I just love.. love.. love all kind of gadgets.

Even if I don't use them I buy them!
